Cordials and Apertifs
Finishing off a nice meal with a cordial, aperitif, wine spritzer, brandy or a nice port makes a nice change from the normal dessert. There was a time that I loved nothing more than a leisurely sipped Grand Marnier at the end of a meal instead of a piece of cake or tort. This was especially true after a heavy sauce laden meal. Some how, a nice drink to aid digestion was much more attractive at least to me.
Unfortunately, due to years of taking anti inflammatory medicine my stomach no longer allows me to consume very much alcoholic beverages. I will on occasion partake and after a meal is one time that I usually treat myself. So, if I have been good and avoided the pre dinner drink and said no to the wine with the meal I can then partake of just one. That makes these occasional usages even more of a treat for me.
One thing to consider when planning an after dinner drink is to offset your main course. A heavier ice cream based drink or a nice deep rich port are usually better after a lighter entree than a heavy saucy entree.
